Letter to Anita Neville - ACTA

Dear Anita Neille,

My name is Kyle Geske and I live in your riding.

I am writing to you due to my concern over what is being called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) as reported on May 24th in the Winnipeg Free Press.

Along other things, this agreement would have Canadian border guards and Internet service providers (ISPs) act as copyright police. They would be charged with checking laptops, iPods, cellular phones, and Internet traffic for content that "infringes" on copyright laws, such as ripped CDs and movies. This is a violation of privacy, especially in the case of the Internet service providers where this policing would amount to wide-scale spying on the Internet usages of their customers. This agreement would also unfairly target Canadian consumers who have legitimately purchased music and movies and copied this media to their laptops, iPods or cellular phones.

It is my understanding that Federal trade agreements do not require parliamentary approval. This secret copyright deal show that our Conservative government does not care about personal privacy or about Canadians' right to debate their own laws.

Please question our Conservative government on their ACTA intentions and press for balanced copyright reform which includes privacy and fair-use protections for consumers.

Thank you kindly, Kyle Geske
